PuertoVallarta‘s insight:

Everyone in Puerto Vallarta is in for a treat: Special Presentation
The famous Russian State Ballet Mari El is back in Puerto Vallarta and on October 9, 2013 will present Don Quixote, the world famous work by Miguel Cervantes, inspired by the Spanish fantasy novel, at Teatro Vallarta at 8:00 PM.  This production demonstrates impeccable technique and elegance. Thedance troupe consists of 30 dancers and soloists of this extraordinary Russian company. Russian State Ballet Mari El is part of Opera and Ballet Sapaev, one of the oldest and most important theaters in Russia. It was formed 45 years ago. Today it is considered one of the most important in Russia, noting especially its young cast, professionalism, impeccable technique and high artistic level. Soloists include Olga Chelpanova, Konstantin Korotkov, Kiril Parschin and Dmitri Kogan.            The young soloists of the company achieved success in prestigious international festivals in Moscow, Perm and Sochi, where they won many major awards. They toured extensively and were invited to the Mariinsky Ballet and Kostrom and also to other cities of Russia and abroad such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Lebanon, UAE, Central and South America, Germany, China, France and in the years 2010 to 2012 in Mexico, where they achieved great success. Thanks to the recognition from the Mexican public, the Russian State Ballet Mari El has already been nominated thrice at the Lunas del Auditorio, prestigious award held in Mexico City, as the best ballet of the year, for the presentation of the ballet Swan Lake and the ballet Romeo and Juliet.            The great teacher, choreographer and former Bolshoi Ballet soloist, artistic director Konstantin Ivanov, is the reason the ballet is now placed among the best in Russia.   Russian State BalletMari El Don QuixoteatTeatro VallartaPuerto Vallarta, JaliscoOctober 9, 2013 The Spanish-inspired fantasy novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (died 1616) has become a classic of the best dance companies in the world. He was a novelist, poet and playwright. Don Quixote, fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha), is considered to be the first modern European novel. He has been called El Príncipe de los Ingenios (The Prince of Wits).
The book follows the adventures of Alonso Quijano, who decides to set out to revive chivalry under the name Don Quixote. Published in two volumes (1605 and 1615), Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of Spanish literature. As a founding work of modern Western literature, it appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published.  Bring your friends and family. This will prove to be a fantastic performance for the people of Puerto Vallarta to support.

Curator’s Corner

Dear Friends of the Gardens,

Puerto Vallarta’s Bugambilea Festival (May 17-25th) was an incredible success with dancing, celebrations, and of course plenty of our favorite “boogie” blossoms. Our dream to turn Puerto Vallarta into the “City of Bougainvilleas” is turning into a reality not just from these festivities, but also from the hard work of the volunteers with the Puerto Vallarta Garden Club and the sponsors of the many planter boxes they have already installed. We’re tremendously excited about the urban rejuvenation these beautification efforts have already had and look forward to realizing our vision for an even more prosperous and gorgeous city.

Many thanks are due to volunteers from the Puerto Vallarta Garden Club, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, and the festival sponsors, especially Tequila Patrón for their generous donation of fine tequila for this event.

bougfest

To the delight of hummingbirds, butterflies, and Garden guests of all types we have planted native Mexican zinnias to replace our winter wildflowers. We hope you are able to join us in admiring these stunning new blooms. Another miracle of life that will happen shortly will be the yearly transformation of our forests from the end of the dry season to nearly instant lush greenery after the start of the rainy season.

Peace Corps Volunteers with VBG-Executive-Director.-Left-to-Right---Melanie-Ingalls,-John-Sacklin,-Neil-Gerlowski-and-Mary-Hektner

The Vallarta Botanical Gardens were recently visited by several volunteers from the Peace Corps and Angel Pineda, the Mexican Director of this US-based organization whose work throughout the world goes a long way to helping important humanitarian and environmental causes. The Vallarta Botanical Gardens are now under consideration to help host a Peace Corps Volunteer along with…

the local CONANP Office (National Commission of Protected Natural Areas). Our next volunteer training will be December 7th.

Mary Hektner, John Sacklin and Melanie Ingalls are volunteers with the United States Peace Corps here in Mexico. John and Mary are working at Parque Nacional Volcán Nevado de Colima near Ciudad Guzman in southern Jalisco. Both retired from careers with the National Park Service in the United States. They were at Yellowstone National Park for nearly 20 years, and they worked at Redwood National Park prior to that. Mary is a plant ecologist and is assisting Nevado de Colima with identification and mapping of fir trees (oyamel or Abies), while John is a park planner helping with information and interpretation at Nevado de Colima.

Melanie is a communications professional who worked in senior management for conservation organizations in the United States–including the National Audubon Society and the Trustees of Reservations—before joining the Peace Corps. She is working with CONAFOR (the Mexican forest service) in Aguascalientes, and is based in the state tree nursery where she is developing and implementing an integrated interpretive plan. She is also working with the national Golden Eagle recovery team in its pilot volunteer nest monitoring project.

The Peace Corps has been working in México since 2004, and currently about 60 volunteers are working throughout central México. The volunteers are helping fulfill the mission of the Peace Corps, which is to provide assistance to the Mexican people by responding to their needs with qualified volunteers, promote knowledge and understanding of Americans to the Mexican people, and promote knowledge and understanding of the Mexican people to Americans.

Representing Our Gardens Internationally

American-Public-Gardens-Association

The Vallarta Botanical Gardens Executive Director, Neil Gerlowski, just returned from Phoenix, Arizona where he represented us at the annual conference of the American Public Garden’s Association along with directors and staff from gardens throughout the US, Canada, and as far away as Jerusalem, Lebanon, Jordan, and…

Pakistan. Neil’s presentations were well received and we are excited about the many new leads we are now exploring for international collaborations related to horticulture and conservation. The VBG’s award as “One of the Top 10 Gardens in North America Worth Visiting in 2013,” by the Garden Tourism Council of Canada was officially presented at this event and is now proudly displayed at the Hacienda de Oro Visitor Center at the Gardens. We are the first garden in Mexico to receive this distinction.

Mexican Orchid of the Month

Barkeria melanocaulon

Barkeria melanocaulon

This miniature sized species is found in central Oaxaca in the transition zone between tropical deciduous forests and dry oak forests either as epiphytes perched upon these trees or lithophytes clinging to limestone boulders.

(Many thanks to Vallarta Orchid Society President T. J. Hartung for permission to draw on information from his publication “Orchids Found ONLY in Mexico,” available in the Gardens‟ gift store.) We continue to seek sponsors for the Conservatory for the National Collection of Mexican Orchids; please click here to donate today!

Hummingbirds at the Gardens

May 15th

Hummingbird-2

The International Day of the Hummingbird Celebration on May 15th was a great success thanks to volunteer bird guides Alejandro Martinez Rodriguez and Luis Morales who helped identify seven different species. Other volunteers from Entre Amigos, the San Pancho Community Center, led a workshop in building hummingbird feeders from recycled materials. Until the first rains hit and the hummingbirds have more options for nectar sources, we continue to be one of the hottest spots in the region for these feathered delights.
